Kitchen Concept Designer of the Year 2022 Winner

Felicity O’Hare

The first step in my design process for this project was to decide where each of my working zones should be positioned. I felt the kitchen worked best in this part of the room, as it has allowed me to create a layout the works well for a busy family of all ages.

Kitchen

  • I have created 4 distinct zones within the kitchen.
  • Wine area for cocktails and drink prep. Storage for bottle and glassware
  • Baking area next to ovens including worktop space and storage
  • The double islands provide ample space for cooking, food prep and washing up.
  • Both islands have bar level seating for casual seating
  • Dining table positioned in front of sliding doors- close proximity to kitchen and makes the most of the garden views
  • I have created a ceiling detail which includes LED Strips to add an extra level of ambient lighting
  • Further LED flex strips in handle-less rail, below bar seating and routered into floating shelving
  • Bar pendants above both islands makes for perfect task lighting
  • Wide pan drawers, with integrated cutlery trays for flexible storage
  • Miele appliances – Sustainably made ovens, dishwasher, fridge & Freezer. There is an Eco motor in Induction venting hob
  • I’ve used Blum Servo Drive Flex opening on the Larder Fridge and freezer either side of the ovens. This keeps this run looking sleek and minimalist.
  • I’ve used, sustainably produced, Silestone HybriQ+ Worktops in Ethereal Haze. The island has been clad with mitered, angled returns on the back.
  • Handle Less Design with black lacquer rails. Easy maintenance flat panel Laminate doors in a wooden Finish. Paired with the Silestone we have classic, contemporary and time-less look
  • Black Quooker Flex Tap with CUBE for sparkling water and Blanco Subline 340/160 Sink in White Sil Granite

Desk Area

  • Pocket door system conceals a small desk area. Wall unit storage. A stool can be placed inside the unit when not in use.
  • I dropped the units to the left down and created a seating area with pull out storage below. I envisage this as a quiet space for the kids to enjoy their reading books, away from the hustle and bustle in the kitchen
  • Wood paneling adds a new level of warmth, texture and colour in the space
  • I felt it was important that this area wasn’t within the kitchen space as there would be too much noise and distraction.

Family TV Space

  • Plenty of space for soft seating and furniture in this area
  • I’ve used wall lights in the space as the pitched ceiling makes pendant lighting tricky
  • Pops of colour throughout the space adds some personality to the design

In conclusion, I feel this design has made the best use of the space available, while fulfilling all the needs and wants the client, as specified on their brief. Nowhere feels cramped- All areas have generous amounts of space for the flow of movement of a modern working family.
