The overcluttered old kitchen did not offer enough storage and was very dark and dull in creams and whites, so they were looking to inject colour and texture.
We started the process based on their own measurements, but quickly realized it might be best to organise a visit. They showed me where their existing flooring will need to be patched up to ensure continuity and we could now go on to pick suitable materials and colour palette.
The design went through quite a few alterations, but ultimately they agreed the seating on the island will create a pinch point, therefore not essential to have. The washing machine I put away to create a seamless design and to minimize noise, which was important to them since unifying the kitchen and utility. I organized the washing machine, boiler and freestanding microwave in that one larder, minimizing clutter for a smart looking line. The teal splashback was present from the very first version of the design, showing their love for the colour and making it a continuous feature around the whole house. They were happy with my selection of Neff appliances and ultimately excited to switch to an induction hob, making the kitchen design sleeker and more energy efficient. The mixture of handle less Burbidge Otto in Light Grey and Natural Hickory Oak warmed the space up and referenced their existing oak furniture in the dining area, while elevating and modernising the space. I introduced more storage and made it efficient and accessible, by adding internal drawers to the pantry, as well as a few wide pullouts and corner carousels. This also ensured more potential future buyers will be pleased with the functionality, as it would be suitable for different age groups and family types.
The finishing touch was the open shelving with added lighting, bringing the kitchen into the dining area with a soft focal point and making the furniture look universal instead of simply kitchen cabinetry. The quartz worksurface will make the space ease to maintain for many years to come and united with the bright flooring and white ceiling scribe, help keep the room bright and spacious.
