Kitchen Designer of the Year 2024 £25 – £50k Winner

Liam Butler

This couple wanted their forever kitchen, to be functional and easy to use for years to come. They wanted a contemporary understated aesthetic that captured a ski chalet vibe, with a pop of colour. As outdoor enthusiasts with a love for all things nature, they also desired a sustainable kitchen solution.

To maximise on practicality and longevity, ergonomics & accessibility have been carefully thought out. Utilizing drawers and pull-outs throughout the space. Worktop heights have also been fine tuned to suit the client’s anthropometrics, with the sink raised higher than the hob for comfortable & healthy use.

The room offered unusually high walls. I wanted to make a feature of this, which led to 1.5m high wall units, reaching to nearly 3m from the floor. The top of these cupboards are not intended for everyday use!

The island I kept mostly open underneath, this allowed for passage of light throughout the space and offered maximum freedom for placement of barstools for different scenarios. There was suitable storage space elsewhere, so no sacrifice was made.

I used a walnut door, to capture that ski chalet aesthetic. The white of the splashback represents the snow on the roof, and for the pop of colour I chose a muted blue, to represent the sky above.

As outdoor enthusiasts, the clients’ environmental concerns aligned with our own. This is why Schuller, a carbon neutral manufacturer was selected for the furniture, with the Avola door which is made from 71% recycled materials and is 100% recyclable.

Schuller’s high quality and durability ensures a long life for this kitchen. Dekton was selected for the worksurfaces, due in part to it too being a carbon neutral product, but also for its durability and ease of maintenance (and the client fell in love with the Trillium colour). The Schock sink is again highly durable, and from their green-line utilising recycled quartz in the manufacturing process.

All in all, the client has got a stunning, ergonomic and sustainable kitchen that meets and exceeds their brief, and due to its potential longevity in terms of both durability and accessibility offers superb value for money.
